I think everyone will agree that Stephen King's work is "contemporary." 
Although much of his work beginning with The Dark Half and since was a turn off for me, I'd have to say that The Shining is still my favorite horror novel. Of course I prefer fantasy, which I like even more when it's mixed with another genre like horror, but otherwise The Shining has everything I could want in a horror novel: strange events, sinister imagery, great character development, and an interesting plot.
