Who set up this magazine?
Well, it isn't quite finished yet, but it's getting there. The site is being set up by Michael Southard (your friendly neighborhood admin), who lives in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
What should I do if I want to write for Tower of Light?
If you write fantasy and would like to sumbit something to Tower of Light, please read the submission guidelines.
How much do you pay?
Since Tower of Light is a free online publication, the current pay rate for stories is $5.00 for 500-4000 words - paid on publication. I hope to pay more in the future as the site grows.
If you publish my story, who owns it?
Tower of Light will get one time electronic and (negotiable) archival rights only. Specifically, we buy the right to publish your story one time in Tower of Light magazine, and to add your story to the archives with your permission. Any story you publish in this magazine is yours.
Do you use a contract?
We don't use a contract, per se. Tower of Light utilizes a written agreement with the author via email. In the email, we make it clear which rights we are buying, and when and how much you - the writer - will get paid. You accept this agreement by returning that e-mail with your reply, and by publishing your story in Tower of Light.
It is important that you remember to include our original e-mail agreement in your reply. If you do not, but we have already decided to use your story, we will contact you again. If we do not receive a response in a timely manner, we will not publish your story and - therefore - you will not get paid.
Who can write for Tower of Light?
Tower of Light will consider stories from any author. I'd like to publish stories from both established authors and first-time writers.
When is the site being launched?
Issue One has already been launched and Issue Two is scheduled to launch by the first week of September.
What else will there be besides stories?
I hope to build the site as part of a community based around bulletin boards. Any suggestions you might have are always welcome at the forums when you register. So far I have one interview, and I'm working on reviews for subsequent issues.
Can I copy the stories?
Uh . . . no. We are talking about intellectual property here. The site is mine, and all story copyrights belong to the authors. You're more than welcome to link to the site and tell everyone you know about it.
How often will Tower of Light publish stories?
Unfortuantely, I have had to cut back due to a lack of funds and other difficulties, so TOL will now be a biannual zine; as the site grows . . . well, we'll see. I'd love to be able to fit in more issues when time and money allow.
Each issue is scheduled to appear as follows:
Winter - January
Summer - July
How can I help?
If you can write a good fantasy story, send one in. You can also join our forums if you want to talk about the magazine or anything to do with science fiction and fantasy If you have a site of your own that is related to science fiction and/or fantasy, please consider linking to Tower of Light forums and magazine.
As far as donations go, while they would be much appreciated, I'm not ready to collect them yet. I'm working on it, though, and I'll let you know as soon as I'm ready.
