While some people might call The Black Throne by Fred Saberhagen and Roger Zelazny science fiction, I still consider it more of a science fiction fantasy. Like the Amber novels, it deals with alternate worlds (and paranormal means of trversing them). However, there is plenty of mystery in the story to keep things interesting.

*SPOILER*
The story is about Edgar Poe, one of his alternates from another world, and a special young lady with powers that enable her to bring them all together in her dreams. One fascinating aspect is that one of the Poes comes from a world with weaker alcohol and humans with a much lower tolerance for it. When certain factions discover how to use this to their advantage, the Poes are literally switched between realities - thus beginning the tragic decline of Poe in our world. The other Poe (who originally came from our world and could drink everyone under the table with few consequences) sets out on an adventure to save the girl and his double, who had all felt very close to one another because of the dream encounters.
