Here's another one that others might call science fiction, but I think that Star Wars includes probably more fantasy conventions than sci-fi conventions. The descriptions of how things work in the story are not necessarily scientific, so I'm inclined to consider it either a "future fantasy" or "science fantasy."
One of the biggest points that I associate with fantasy convention is the strong Taoistic theme in the story. It is very spiritual in that sense.
Of course, I haven't read the books for the first three episodes, but episode one did include a genetic explanation for strong presences of the Force in humans. Mystical elements, however, are often present in, infused with, or just naturally a part of physical objects anyway; so the argument could be made that Star Wars has a little bit of both.
I was shocked the other day when someone told me Star Wars was considered sci-fi. I have always thought of it as fantasy. In fact I always think of all space opera novels/movies/short stories as falling in the fantasy genre. So I agree with you!
Interesting you should mention Taoism with Star Wars. Absolutely. In fact one of my favorite spiritual books is the Tao Te Ching. Okay, I'm Wiccan, but a verrrry eclectic Wiccan.
I also love The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet. Have you read those books by Benjamin Hoff? The virtue of the small and the uncarved block. Love it! _________________ Laura Stamps
